Gujarat ranks 4th lowest in unemployment rates across all age groups

Delhi: Gujarat is among the states with the lowest unemployment rates, ranking 4th from the bottom across all age groups for 2022-23. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of Labour and Employment shared the information on unemployment rates in India in a written response to Lok Sabha today.
Gujarat reported unemployment rates of 5.1% for those aged 15-29 years, 1.8% for the 15-59 years group, and 1.7% for those aged 15 years and above. This position reflects relatively lower unemployment compared to many other states in India.
Gujarat’s unemployment rate of 5.1% for the 15-29 years age group is lower than Delhi’s 6.1%, Maharashtra’s 10.9%, Karnataka’s 8.5%, and much lower than Andhra Pradesh’s 15.7%. For the 15-59 years age group, Gujarat’s unemployment rate of 1.8% is lower than Delhi’s 2.0%, Maharashtra’s 3.4%, Karnataka’s 2.6%, and Andhra Pradesh’s 4.4%. Among those aged 15 years and above, Gujarat’s rate of 1.7% is lower than Delhi’s 1.9%, Maharashtra’s 3.1%, Karnataka’s 2.4%, and Andhra Pradesh’s 4.1%.

Gujarat’s Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above increased from 49.7% in 2018-19 to 61.5% in 2022-23, surpassing the national average of 56.0%. This growth places Gujarat ahead of states like Delhi (45.8%), Goa (45.1%), and Karnataka (55.6%). However, Gujarat’s WPR is still lower than top-performing states such as Himachal Pradesh (73.8%), Chhattisgarh (70.1%), and Sikkim (74.0%).
