Gujarat ranks 3rd in banana production nationwide; tops in productivity per hectare globally

Bharuch: With an annual production of 37.47 million metric tons, India stands as the world’s top producer of bananas, surpassing countries like China, Indonesia, Brazil, and Ecuador. Within the country, Gujarat ranks third in banana production, holding an 11.81% share, following Andhra Pradesh at 17.64% and Maharashtra at 12.77%.

However, in terms of productivity per hectare, Gujarat ranks highest not only in India but globally, achieving 65.91 tons per hectare. This surpasses both the national average of 35.78 tons and the global average of 17.18 tons per hectare, a feat attributed to the widespread use of tissue culture saplings and advanced production methods.

Bharuch leads Gujarat’s banana productivity at 72.55 tons per hectare, with Narmada, Chhota Udepur, Vadodara, and Anand collectively contributing over 80% of the state’s output. It is also noted that Bharuch, Narmada, and Surat districts contribute significantly to exports, shipping 400 metric tons and generating Rs 2.52 crore in revenue. DeshGujarat
