Surat Metro Phase 1 likely to be operational by June 2025
November 11, 2024
Surat: Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) had earlier announced that Phase 1 of Surat Metro would be operational by December this year, and Phase 2 of the project would be completed by March 2024. However, it is learned that Phase 1 is now likely to begin by June 2025.
Two metro corridors are under construction in Surat city. Phase 1 includes a 21.61 km route between Sarthana and Dream City, which will have a 6.47 km underground metro corridor with six underground stations from Kapodra to Chowk Bazar. This corridor will be known as the Diamond Corridor. The second corridor, which will run between Bhesan and Saroli, will be 16 km long and will be called the textile corridor.
As of now, Phase 1 of Surat Metro is 62% complete, while Phase 2 work is only 40% complete. A total of 55% of the entire project has been completed.
Soil filling work was carried out in October. 113 piles, 22 pile caps, 44 piers, a 25 m guide wall, a 51 m diaphragm wall, and 1,038 sq. meters of slab have been completed at the construction site of the underground station. 87 rings have been installed in the tunnel. 203 box girder segments have been placed, and 2 tunnel segments and 781 parameters have been cast in the casting yard.
It is worth noting that 20 metro stations will be constructed from Sarthana to Dream City, while the Bhesan to Saroli corridor will feature 18 fully elevated metro stations. The junction station of the metro will be at Majura Gate, where passengers can transfer to either route. As Surat is set to receive the metro train service, mass transportation in the city will significantly improve. Along with the existing BRTS and city bus services, the metro will provide substantial convenience to Surat’s citizens in the coming days. DeshGujarat
