Driver of overspeeding car held for hitting cyclist doctors on SG Highway flyover

Ahmedabad: The city police today arrested the driver who had absconding after hitting two cyclist doctors with his overspeeding car on a flyover on SG Highway on November 23rd. The arrest came within hours of an awareness rally organized by the injured doctors and around 200 other cyclists. The accused, identified as Param Uday Vora, had fled to Udaipur after the crash. The police identified him through CCTV footage and are carrying out further investigations into the matter.

On November 23, two cyclists were injured when the driver of an unknown vehicle hit them on the flyover bridge near the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad. To prevent such incidents from recurring in the city, 200 cyclists from seven different cycling groups in Ahmedabad participated in a rally this morning. They cycled for 25 km to raise awareness among the public. Notably, the two cyclists injured in the accident also joined today’s rally and appealed to motorists to be more mindful of cyclists.

The rally started at 6:30 AM from Gotila Garden, took a U-turn at Vaishnodevi Circle, and ended near Pakwan Char Rasta. The route spanned more than 25 kilometers. Seven major cycling groups from Ahmedabad participated in the rally, including Paddlers, Friends Cycling Club, Green Riders, Bycs Ahmedabad, 079 Riders, Cyclone Cycling Club, and Road Soldiers Group. All participants wore safety gear, including helmets, and equipped their bicycles with front and rear lights. The rally’s objective was to demand better facilities for cycling, strict enforcement of road safety rules, and to raise awareness about giving way to cyclists.

It is worth noting that the two cyclists injured in the November 23 accident on the flyover near the High Court are members of the Paddlers Group. Krishna Shukla and Dr. Anish Tiwari, both of whom were injured, also participated in today’s rally.

Krishna Shukla stated, “We all cyclists ride on the road. People who drive cars should be more considerate of cyclists. I have a fracture and need to rest for six weeks.” Dr. Anish Tiwari, who was also injured in the accident, said, “We started cycling at 6 AM on November 23. We were on Sola Bridge when I was suddenly hit, and I was flung 12 feet away. My fellow riders were also thrown to the ground. Other riders helped take us to the hospital via the 108 emergency service.” DeshGujarat
