Surat: Four contractual workers lost their lives from severe burns caused by a fire at ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India’s Hazira plant on Tuesday, following an equipment malfunction. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. during the restart of the Corex unit after a scheduled shutdown. All four victims died at the scene.
It is learned that hot raw material leaked from the ruptured raw material channel, causing the fire. The four workers, who were in the nearby elevator, suffered severe burns and died on the spot. Hazira Police identified the deceased as Jignesh Dilipkumar, Dhaval Nareshbhai, Sandeep Patel, and Ganesh Buddh, who were inside the elevator when the fire occurred.
The workers, who were performing maintenance on a nearby elevator, were caught in the fire’s impact and could not survive. One other worker sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken to the plant’s hospital, where he is recovering, the spokesperson confirmed.
The company stated that all emergency protocols were activated immediately, and the affected area has been sealed off. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities and have launched an internal investigation to determine the cause of the accident,” the spokesperson said.
Police Inspector V.L. Parmar confirmed that a case of accidental death has been filed, and an investigation is underway. DeshGujarat
