February 04, 2025
Gandhinagar: India celebrated 100 years of its first-ever electric train on Monday. Over the past century, the nation has electrified 64,547 km of its total broad gauge railway network. Of this, 3,972 km have been electrified in Gujarat, covering over 97% of the state’s broad gauge railway network as of 3rd February 2025.
As per the latest figures on December 31, 2024, Gujarat has a total of 4,087 km of broad gauge railway lines, out of which 3,972 km have been electrified, leaving only 115 km without electrification. The electrification of railway line makes it possible to operate electric engine run trains. Apart from overhead electric line, substations are also required at places to make this possible. In a latest, the Ahmedabad Himmatnagar Udaipur railway line electrification project is completed.
Notably, as of April 1, 2014, only 785 km were electrified in Gujarat, according to government data. This means that around 3,187 km—nearly 80% of the state’s broad gauge network—has been electrified since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014.
Similarly, across India, the railways are progressing rapidly toward 100% electrification. Out of the total 66,504 km of broad gauge network, 97.06%, or 64,547 route kilometers (rkm), has been electrified. Only 1,957 km of broad gauge track remains to be electrified nationwide, which is expected to be completed soon. Since April 2022, an average of 48 km of railway routes has been electrified per month.
During the Modi government’s tenure, several railway electrification projects were completed across Gujarat. Key routes that have been electrified include Ahmedabad-Palanpur, Ahmedabad-Viramgam-Surendranagar-Rajkot, and Rajkot-Okha with Kanalus-Sikka. Other major routes include Mahesana-Viramgam-Dhrangadhra-Samakhiyali, Samakhiyali-Gandhidham-Adipur with Kandla Port-Mundra Port, Adipur-New Bhuj, Palanpur-Samakhiyali, and Surendranagar-Dhrangadhra. Additionally, electrification was completed on the Wankaner-Dahinsara-Maliya Miyana, Dhola-Sihor-Palitana with Sihor-Bhavnagar, Rajula-Mahuva, Jhund-Kharaghoda, Mahesana-Patan-Bhildi, and Rajkot-Gondal-Jetalsar-Veraval routes. Other important sections include Nadiad-Modasa, Kanalus-Wansjaliya-Porbandar, Surendranagar-Pipavav Port, Mahesana-Varetha, Dhasa-Jetalsar, Vishwamitri-Dabhoi-Ekta Nagar, Anand-Khambhat, and Ahmedabad-Mahesana.
Meanwhile, electrification work is still in progress on the Asarva-Himmatnagar and Bhimnath-Moraiya sections. DeshGujarat
