Six-lane river barrage-cum-bridge on Sabarmati set for completion in April 2027

Ahmedabad: As part of Phase-2 of the Sabarmati Riverfront Project, a six-lane barrage-cum-bridge is under construction, connecting Acher on the west bank to Camp Sadar Bazar on the east bank. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), overseeing the project, has confirmed its expected completion by April 2027.

The civil construction contract, with the tender value of ₹239.92 crore, has been awarded to M/s Rajkamal Builders Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.. Initial groundwork, including survey work, soil investigation, and site mobilization, has been completed. The Road and Building Department, Government of Gujarat, is currently reviewing and approving the bridge’s design. While the civil work design has been cleared, the structural design remains under verification. The construction of the R.C.C. diaphragm wall and riverbed soil filling is already underway.

For the barrage, the contract for manufacturing, supply, installation, and maintenance of the Air-Filled Rubber Type Barrage and its electro-mechanical automation system has been awarded to M/s YOOIL Envirotech Private Limited, South Korea, for ₹53.78 crore. The rubber membrane installation will begin after the completion of civil work, post-monsoon in 2026.

The 1,048.08-meter-long six lane bridge will feature approach bridges from both sides of the Sadar Bridge, linking the riverfront road to the main bridge. The central span will have a 126-meter-long iron arch, with 42-meter sections on both sides adopting a suspended arch design, while the remaining stretch will use pre-stressed box-type girders. Moreover, a 3-meter-wide footpath with tensile roofing will be positioned below road level, offering unobstructed views of the river.

This bridge when ready will provide direct connectivity between western Ahmedabad, including Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, and Hansol, and the eastern areas near the airport, easing traffic congestion. Furthermore, the barrage will help maintain water levels up to Gandhinagar, ensuring adequate water supply for Ahmedabad, especially during maintenance of the Narmada Main Canal.

The air-filled rubber barrage, the first of its kind in Gujarat, will have automatic control systems to regulate river flow. Additionally, 10-meter-wide lock gates will be installed on both riverbanks for decorative lighting and water transportation. DeshGujarat
