Tax cuts on petrol and diesel benefit citizens by ₹8,561 crore in two years: Gujarat govt

Gandhinagar: Finance Minister Shri Kanubhai Desai stated that the state government had significantly reduced the tax rates on petrol, diesel, CNG, and PNG in 2021. Despite more than four years having passed since the reduction, no increase has been made in these rates. On November 4, 2021, the state government reduced the tax rate on petrol from 20.10% to 13.7% and on diesel from 20.20% to 14.9%.

The Minister added that the reduction in the petrol tax rate has benefited citizens by ₹3,194 crore over the past two years, with ₹1,568 crore in the financial year 2023-24 and ₹1,626 crore in 2024-25. Similarly, the reduction in the diesel tax rate has provided a total benefit of ₹5,367 crore over the last two years, with approximately ₹2,919 crore in 2023-24 and ₹2,448 crore in 2024-25.

Additionally, in response to a sub-question, the Minister stated that the tax rate on CNG and PNG had been reduced from 15% to 5%. The reduction in CNG tax has benefited citizens by ₹599 crore over the past two years, including ₹298 crore in the financial year 2023-24 and ₹301 crore in the ongoing financial year 2024-25.

Furthermore, the reduction in PNG tax has provided a benefit of ₹345 crore to citizens over the last two years, with ₹177 crore in 2023-24 and ₹168 crore in 2024-25, the Minister added. DeshGujarat
