DRI, Customs seize ₹39 crore worth hydroponic weed at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: In a joint operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Ahmedabad Customs Department seized 39.24 kg of hydroponic cannabis (weed) at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Three individuals who arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, were arrested for allegedly smuggling the contraband worth around ₹39 crore.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials closely monitored the suspects, including a woman who arrived from a Thai Airways flight, and searched their six trolley bags, uncovering 60 packets of a suspicious green substance hidden inside branded food items like Kellogg’s cereals and snacks, concealed under clothing. Chemical testing confirmed the substance as hydroponic marijuana. The narcotics were confiscated under the NDPS Act, 1985, and further investigation is ongoing.

This latest seizure follows earlier busts on April 29 (37.2 kg) and April 20 (17.5 kg), bringing the total quantity of hydroponic cannabis seized at the airport since April 20 to nearly 95 kg. DeshGujarat
