Botswana’s Okavango Diamond Company to open rough diamond auction centre in Surat

Surat: In a major boost to the diamond manufacturing sector, Botswana’s renowned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) has announced plans to set up a rough diamond auction centre in Surat. This move is expected to benefit small-scale manufacturers the most, as they will gain direct access to rough diamonds without needing to travel abroad.

The company is likely to begin its operations in Surat by August or September this year. The announcement follows a recent visit by a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) delegation to Botswana, aimed at strengthening India’s gems and jewellery trade. During the visit, diamond industry leaders discussed the potential for opening an auction facility in Surat.

Ashish Borda, a member of GJEPC’s Young Diamond Panel Committee, said ODC is not only planning auction sales but also exploring long-term sales contracts and is open to meeting local manufacturers in Surat.

The auction is likely to be held at the Surat Diamond Bourse or on GJEPC platforms, allowing participation from small manufacturers, provided they register under ODC’s tendering process. With this development, buyers who previously travelled to Botswana or Belgium for rough diamonds will now be able to access them in Surat itself. ODC’s interest in partnering with Surat-based diamond firms marks a significant step in strengthening India–Botswana trade ties in the gem and jewellery sector. DeshGujarat
