Gujarat Schools to Update the Method of Recording Student Names; Surname to Come at the End

Ahmedabad: Starting from this new academic year that began on Monday, June 9, schools across Gujarat will update how student names are recorded in official documents such as the General Register (GR) and School Leaving Certificate (LC). As per the new format, surnames will now appear at the end of students’ names, similar to the format used in Aadhaar cards.

This change follows a circular issued by the Gujarat state education department aimed at addressing difficulties encountered while generating Apaar IDs due to discrepancies between school records and Aadhaar information. Previously, schools listed the surname first, followed by the student’s first name and father’s name. However, Aadhaar records list the first name before the surname.

The mismatch caused technical challenges in linking and verifying student information for the Apaar ID system. To rectify this, the Samagra Shiksha state project director has directed all government primary and secondary schools to follow the revised format: student’s first name, father’s name, and surname.

The new naming convention is expected to simplify Apaar ID generation, create consistency across essential documents, and reduce administrative issues during student transfers or government verification processes.

Schools have been urged to implement this change starting with the upcoming academic session to align with national identity documentation protocols. DeshGujarat
