August 08, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner, G.S. Malik, IPS, has issued an official order mandating the immediate closure of the old Shastri Bridge (located on the left from Pirana Junction to Vishala Junction over the Sabarmati River) for all heavy and medium goods vehicles, as well as passenger vehicles.
This measure follows a structural inspection by the National Highways Department, which revealed deterioration in the bridge’s bearings and pedestals, raising serious safety concerns.
Closure Details:
A road segment of approximately 4 kilometers—including 500 meters on both ends of the Shastri Bridge from Vishala Circle to Pirana Circle—will remain completely closed to all heavy and medium goods carriers, as well as passenger vehicles.
Alternative Routes:
1. Vehicles from Lambha, Jashodanagar, and the Baroda Expressway must turn right at Pirana Junction, pass the Pirana Dumping Yard, Calico Mill, and Behrampura Crossroads, then turn left to reach Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Bridge. From Anjali Crossroads, they can proceed towards Vasna and Vishala Wala Marg.
2. Vehicles from Sarkhej and Juhapura should use Vasna Road via Anjali Crossroads, proceed to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Bridge, then turn right at Behrampura Crossroads via Calico Mill, continue past the Pirana Dumping Yard, and reach Pirana Junction.
Effective Period:
The order will remain in force from 00:00 hours on August 9, 2025, until February 8, 2026, in accordance with the provisions of Section 33 of the Gujarat Police Act, 1951.
Penalties for Violation:
Anyone found violating this notification will face legal action under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 2023, and Section 131 of the Gujarat Police Act. Police personnel from the rank of Constable to Special/Joint/Additional Commissioner are authorized to take enforcement action.
This decision has been taken to ensure public safety, prevent traffic congestion, and maintain smooth vehicular movement in Ahmedabad during the closure period. DeshGujarat
