Ahmedabad: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of 14 high court judges, including two judges from the Gujarat High Court. These decisions were made during Collegium meetings held on August 25 and 26.
Justice Manvendranath Roy has been proposed for transfer back to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, his parent court, while Justice Sandeep Natvarlal Bhatt has been recommended for transfer to the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Roy practiced law in Parvathipuram and Vizianagaram for 14 years before being appointed as a District and Sessions Judge in 2002. He was elevated to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on June 20, 2019, becoming the first judge appointed after the court’s reconstitution that year, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on June 12, 2019. In November 2023, he was transferred to the Gujarat High Court, assuming office on November 2, 2023.
Justice Bhatt completed his science degree from Kotak Science College, Rajkot, in 1988 and earned his law degree in 1992. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Gujarat on January 23, 1993, and began practicing at the Rajkot District Court alongside his father, NS Bhatt, former Vice Chairman of the Bar Council of India. In 1994, he moved his practice to the Gujarat High Court under the mentorship of the late Girishbhai D. Bhatt. He was elevated as a High Court judge in October 2021.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court Advocates’ Association (GHCAA) has announced an indefinite boycott of court proceedings in protest against the proposed transfer of Justice Sandeep Bhatt. DeshGujarat
