French designer praises Ahmedabad as one of the safest cities for women; X post goes viral

Ahmedabad: A French designer living in India has praised Ahmedabad as one of the safest places for women, sparking widespread reactions on social media.

Julia Chaignot, a 23-year-old designer who moved to India nearly two years ago, shared in a viral X post that she has “never felt safer” than in Ahmedabad.

Taking to X, Julia wrote: “I lived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat (India) for a year and honestly, I never felt safer. As a woman, safety is always on my mind. So when I first moved to India, many of my friends worried about me. But living in a dry state changed my perspective. It made me see how certain choices at a city level can actually influence how safe a place feels. I was also fortunate to stay in a gated community that brought together both Indians and foreigners. It felt secure, but also warm and welcoming. This is not to say everywhere in India is safe — every city and every state is different — but from my experience, Ahmedabad has been really great to live in.”

Her post drew hundreds of responses. One user wrote, “I’ve lived in Ahmedabad for 15+ years, and I never think twice about taking a cab or walking at 2 am.” Another added, “I also live in Ahmedabad and consider it India’s safest city.”

Others highlighted Ahmedabad’s heritage. “It’s India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City. I hope you got to experience the old city walk,” commented one user, to which Julia replied she had, calling it “amazing.”

According to her X bio, Julia describes herself as a French designer who has lived in India for the past two years with her cat, Divine. She is currently working with her co-founder Prachi to build her own business. DeshGujarat
