Policemen in Ahmedabad extort NRI returned from abroad

Ahmedabad: A shocking case of misconduct has surfaced against city policemen, after an NRI youth from Kutch accused four personnel of extortion and misbehavior near the Vaishnodevi toll plaza.
According to the complaint filed by the victim, identified as Pankaj Bhatia, a resident of Adipur currently settled in Muscat, the incident occurred shortly after he landed at Ahmedabad airport and was traveling home in a taxi. The taxi was intercepted near the toll booth, where four men—two in police uniform—stopped him and demanded to see his passport and luggage.
Upon inspection, the policemen allegedly found two duty-free liquor bottles in his bag, which he had lawfully brought from Muscat. The accused then allegedly threatened to register a case against him and demanded ₹1.5 lakh in bribe. When he resisted, the policemen took away both liquor bottles and forcibly extorted ₹20,000 in cash.
Bhatia later lodged a complaint at Chandkheda Police Station, leading to the registration of a case against four policemen. Officials confirmed that the investigation has begun, though the names of the accused personnel have not yet been disclosed.
The incident comes just days after another controversy in Ahmedabad, where three TRB jawans and a constable were booked for looting ₹5.88 lakh from a Mumbai-based businessman.
Meanwhile, sources said the accused policemen even attempted to pressurize Bhatia into withdrawing his complaint by approaching him in Kutch. However, the case remains under investigation, and authorities have assured strict action against those found guilty.
This latest episode has once again raised serious concerns about police accountability and the misuse of authority in the city.
