Illegal parking on Sindhu Bhavan Road to attract ₹3k fine as AMC plans stricter rules

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to tackle the city’s long-standing parking woes with stricter rules and penalties, as part of a new Parking Management Plan, according to a report by Times of India.

As a pilot initiative, Sindhu Bhavan Road (SBR) will be designated a zero-tolerance zone, where violators will face heavy fines. Proposed penalties include Rs 1,500 for two-wheelers during peak hours and Rs 1,000 during off-peak hours, while four-wheelers may be fined Rs 3,000 during peak times and Rs 2,000 in off-peak periods.

Parking charges will be structured based on demand, ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 60 for two-wheelers and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for four-wheelers, with arrangements for drivers to use multi-level parking facilities or other on-street spaces identified by the AMC.

The report also states that, depending on the success of the SBR pilot, the policy may expand to Rajpath Rangoli Road and Bopal-Ambli Road. Surveys of commercial complexes on SBR are also underway to explore sharing of vacant parking spaces.

According to AMC officials, the project includes a detailed study of parking demand and management in all parts of the city, creation of new parking facilities, and the use of public spaces for parking. Ahmedabad’s Parking Policy was approved by the state government in October 2021, and the city’s parking bylaws were drafted in 2023. DeshGujarat
