Former Gujarat Minister files cyber crime complaint over AI-made defamatory video

Jamnagar: Former Gujarat Agriculture Minister and Jamnagar Rural MLA Raghavji Patel has filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police, alleging an attempt to defame him through doctored photos and videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

According to the FIR, the offence has been registered under Sections 336(2), 336(4), 352 and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66(c) of the Information Technology Act. The complaint states that the unknown holder of a Facebook ID named Vishal Kansagara and an Instagram ID v.kansagara77 unlawfully obtained the complainant’s photographs without consent, committed identity theft, and used AI tools to edit and distort the images. The alleged acts were carried out with the intention of defaming the complainant, damaging his reputation, extracting money, or gaining cheap publicity.

The former minister has further alleged in the FIR that despite being aware that such acts would harm his reputation, the accused created false electronic records, prepared multiple videos, and added defamatory and provocative text or audio to the photos and videos with the intent to incite a breach of peace. These images and videos were subsequently uploaded and made viral on social media platforms.

Based on the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the matter.

Speaking on the issue, Patel said that certain individuals are conspiring against him by creating distorted images using AI and circulating them on social media. “I have filed a complaint in this regard. Similar attempts are being made to defame Poonam Maadam and Parimal Nathwani on social media,” he alleged.

Patel further said that he has demanded that the Jamnagar District Police Chief ensure a thorough probe to identify those behind the conspiracy. He added that if any political opponents are found to be involved in such activities, strict action should be taken against them. DeshGujarat
