Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is set to revise its public road transport system after two decades, as buses will once again operate on 389 passenger routes across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. Of these, around 30 routes will connect Madhya Pradesh with neighbouring Gujarat.

These are the same routes on which Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) buses previously operated. Services on these routes are expected to resume from the beginning of the 2026–27 financial year, after completion of all formal procedures. The proposal was approved in a high-level meeting held on December 23, attended by Transport Minister Rao Uday Pratap Singh and senior officials.

These routes were discontinued after the MPSRTC was shut down many years ago. During the meeting, it was decided that after the formation of the State Transport Undertaking and the State Transport Authority, contracts will be executed with private bus operators and permits will be issued to them. Although interstate routes were halted after MPSRTC’s closure, several contracts technically remained valid. Under the new initiative, buses will be reintroduced on these routes, and pending permit applications will be cleared expeditiously.

It has also come to light that an agreement has already been signed for operating buses on 30 routes connected to Gujarat. For the resumption of services, the State Transport Undertaking will soon hold discussions with the Gujarat Transport Department to complete the remaining formalities. DeshGujarat
