January 06, 2026
Gandhinagar: The GP-SMASH (Gujarat Police – Social Media Monitoring, Analysis and Systematic Handling) project, launched by Gujarat Police on March 1, 2025, to strengthen citizen engagement through social media, has recorded significant success over the past 10 months, officials said.
According to Gujarat Police, since the project’s inception, GP-SMASH has received a wide range of complaints, including 71 related to law and order, 233 cybercrime cases, 71 physical crime complaints, 30 cases of alleged police misconduct, 83 prohibition-related complaints, 377 traffic issues, 109 cases of theft, robbery or missing persons, two railway-related matters, and several others. Of these, more than 1,150 complaints, constituting the majority, have been resolved amicably within the stipulated timeframe.
Under this project, a dedicated state-level GP-SMASH team monitors crime-related activities and citizen grievances on social media platforms round-the-clock. In addition, separate teams function across all districts, ranges and units to ensure prompt action at the local level.
Notable interventions in 2025
Officials said the GP-SMASH team has demonstrated its effectiveness by providing immediate assistance in emergency situations reported via social media.
In one incident, a woman, Tarunaben Jain, alerted authorities on X (formerly Twitter) after a woman fell from coach S4 of Train No. 12471, leaving her two children stranded onboard. GP-SMASH in-charge PSI K. O. Desai responded within four minutes and directed Western Railway, Vadodara, to take immediate action. As a result, one team safely secured the children while another located the injured woman and arranged medical assistance.
In another case, a Canada-based youth, Ayush, recovered ₹65,000 within a day after posting on X about being defrauded by a trader on August 28, 2025. GP-SMASH state team PSI Rahul Singh Chudasama promptly alerted Vadodara Police, who contacted both parties despite the time difference. The trader subsequently returned the amount the following day.
In a third incident, a woman, Subhashini M., informed authorities on X that five youths, including her son, had gone missing while trekking in the forests of Narmada district due to lack of mobile connectivity. Acting immediately, GP-SMASH shift in-charge PSI S. G. Chauhan directed Narmada Police to launch a search operation. With the support of local police and the forest department, all five youths were located and brought to safety by around 4.30 pm.
Officials said the GP-SMASH project has made Gujarat Police more accessible to citizens, enabling them to seek assistance with a single click. Citizens can register complaints or share concerns by tagging the official X handle of Gujarat Police, @GujaratPolice. DeshGujarat
