Pune Outer Ring Road: Latest Package-Wise Progress Update

Pune: The Maharashtra government had, a few days ago, set a definitive construction timeline for the much-awaited Pune Outer Ring Road (PRR), with the western corridor scheduled for completion by 2026 and the eastern corridor targeted for completion by 2028.

The ambitious 136-kilometre-long infrastructure project, being executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), aims to decongest Pune city roads, divert heavy and long-distance traffic away from urban areas, and improve connectivity across the city’s rapidly expanding peripheral regions.

Western Ring Road: Package-Wise Status

According to the latest package-wise progress data released by Infra News India, construction activity on the western section is progressing steadily across all five awarded packages.

  • PRR-W1 (14.65 km) – Awarded to Megha Engineering; work progress at 19%, up from 16%.

  • PRR-W2 (20 km) – Navayuga Engineering; 31% completed (earlier 28%).

  • PRR-W3 (14 km) – Navayuga Engineering; 36% progress, showing consistent advancement.

  • PRR-W4 (7.5 km) – Navayuga Engineering; 35% completed.

  • PRR-W5 (9.3 km) – GR Infra; work stands at 25%, compared to 21% earlier.

Reports indicate that the western section is progressing at a faster pace, enabling the government to maintain its 2026 completion target.

Eastern Ring Road: Slower Progress, Phased Execution

The eastern corridor of the Pune Ring Road has been divided into seven packages, of which work is currently underway on four, while the remaining three are awaiting administrative approval.

The package-wise construction status reflects early-stage progress:

  • PRR-E1 (11.85 km) – Megha Engineering; 16% complete.

  • PRR-E2 (13.8 km) – PNC Infratech; 17% progress.

  • PRR-E3 (21.2 km) – Megha Engineering; 14% completed.

  • PRR-E4 (24.5 km) – Roadway Solutions; 25% progress.

Three packages remain unawarded:

  • PRR-E5 (9.57 km) – Yet to be awarded

  • PRR-E6 (16 km) – Yet to be awarded

  • PRR-E7 (6.24 km) – Yet to be awarded

Last month, Public Works Minister Dada Bhuse informed the State Assembly that tenders for the pending eastern packages will be finalised before May 2026, with construction expected to begin by October 2026. Due to this staggered implementation approach, the eastern Ring Road is projected to be completed by 2028.

Strategic Importance of the Pune Ring Road

The Pune Outer Ring Road is envisioned as a critical mobility corridor designed to:

  • reduce chronic traffic congestion within Pune city,

  • divert heavy commercial vehicles away from urban stretches,

  • improve regional logistics movement, and

  • support planned urban expansion and satellite townships.

Once operational, the PRR will form a major circumferential highway linking national and state highways around Pune.

With measurable progress on the western corridor and administrative milestones lined up for the eastern section, the Pune Outer Ring Road is now moving into a decisive construction phase that is expected to significantly reshape the city’s transportation landscape over the next four years.
