Illegal White LED Headlights a Punishable Offence; Govt warns Dealers, Garages, Users
January 22, 2026
Gandhinagar: As part of Road Safety Month observed throughout January, the state Road Transport Department has ordered strict action against the use of unauthorized high-intensity white LED headlights, citing their role in causing serious and even fatal road accidents.
The directive has been issued to all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state, instructing them to take firm and legal action against vehicles fitted with white LED headlights that violate prescribed norms. The circular, issued by the Road Transport Commissioner, makes it clear that installing such lights is a punishable offence under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The order comes amid growing complaints from motorists, from across Gujarat, about being temporarily blinded by excessively bright LED headlights, especially during night driving and on highways. Officials noted that these lights severely reduce visibility for oncoming drivers and vehicles following behind, leading to dangerous situations.
According to transport authorities, several serious accidents—including fatal ones—have been linked to the glare caused by unauthorized white LED headlights. The intense white light momentarily blinds drivers, making it difficult to judge distance and road conditions.
In response, the Transport Department has instructed all RTOs, DTOs, checking squads and traffic police to conduct regular as well as special enforcement drives.Vehicles found violating the rules will face penalties under Sections (1) to (7) of the Motor Vehicles Act.Action may include fines, seizure of documents, and in severe cases, stopping the vehicle from operating.
Significantly, the crackdown will not be limited to vehicle owners alone. Auto dealers and garage owners who install unauthorized white LED headlights—either at the time of sale or during post-sale modifications—will also face strict action. The authorities have been empowered to take punitive measures up to and including suspension of dealership or garage licenses.
The Transport Department believes that this decision will significantly improve road safety and provide much-needed relief to ordinary motorists.A statewide special enforcement campaign against illegal white LED headlights is expected to be launched in the coming days.
Officials have appealed to vehicle owners to comply with lighting regulations and contribute to safer roads by avoiding unauthorized modifications. DeshGujarat
