Surat: Two of the five workers who sustained severe burn injuries in a massive fire that broke out at a plastic scrap godown in the Udhna area of Surat have died during treatment, police said on Thursday.
According to preliminary information, the fire erupted late at night at a plastic factory and scrap storage godown. Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast, following which the flames spread rapidly across the premises. The fire intensified so quickly that five workers present inside were engulfed before they could escape.
All five injured workers were rushed to a private hospital in the city. Two of them succumbed to their injuries during treatment, while the remaining three are currently undergoing medical care. Hospital sources said the condition of some of the injured remains critical.
Following the fatalities, the Udhna police registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation. The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained; however, officials suspect a possible short circuit or chemical reaction.
Police are also examining the godown’s safety arrangements and have begun inquiry into whether adequate fire safety measures were in place at the facility. DeshGujarat
