India’s first LNG-powered train arrives in Ahmedabad
January 30, 2026
Ahmedabad: India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered train has reached Ahmedabad, ushering in a new era of modern railway facilities. The advanced train is capable of travelling up to 2,200 km on a full tank, highlighting a major shift towards cleaner and more efficient fuel technology.
Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash said the LNG-based system delivers nearly three times the benefits compared to conventional diesel engines, making it both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. For the first time, Indian Railways has successfully operated a passenger train using LNG fuel, which is expected to reduce operational expenses while supporting environmental protection.
Under this initiative, DEMU and DPC trains that previously relied entirely on diesel are now being converted to dual fuel systems. Two power cars with a capacity of around 1,400 horsepower have already been upgraded and have completed more than 2,000 km of successful trials. These trains are now running in regular passenger service.
Railway officials noted that LNG significantly cuts down harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, improving air quality along railway routes. The technology also offers substantial cost savings, with estimates suggesting an annual saving of up to ₹23.9 lakh for an eight-coach DEMU train.
Ved Prakash added that the LNG system does not compromise engine performance or reliability, while reducing the need for frequent refuelling due to its long range. Trials are currently underway on the Mahesana–Sabarmati section, and plans are in place to extend this technology to eight to ten more trains in the near future.
With LNG-powered trains, Indian Railways is taking a significant step towards clean energy, reduced pollution and more economical operations, benefiting both the environment and the economy. DeshGujarat
