Chhari-Dhandh Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat added to Ramsar Sites list

Kutch: Ahead of World Wetlands Day, the Chhari-Dhandh Bird Sanctuary in Kutch has been added to the prestigious list of Ramsar Sites, taking the total number of Ramsar wetlands in Gujarat to five.

The other Ramsar Sites in the state include Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Thol Bird Sanctuary, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, and Wadhvana Bird Sanctuary. Gujarat remains a key hub for wetlands, accounting for over 21% of India’s total wetland area and serving as an important destination for both migratory and resident birds.

Along with Chhari-Dhandh, Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, has also been included in the Ramsar list. The two wetlands support hundreds of avian species and provide habitat for wildlife such as chinkara, wolves, caracal, desert cats, and desert foxes, besides endangered birds.

With these additions, India’s Ramsar network has expanded significantly, rising from 26 sites in 2014 to 98 at present—an increase of more than 276%.

About Chhari-Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve

Chhari-Dhand Wetland is situated on the fringes of the arid Banni grasslands and the marshy salt flats of the Rann of Kutch in Kutch district. This seasonal desert wetland turns swampy during the monsoon, fed by north-flowing rivers and nearby hills.

The reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers and ornithologists, drawing large numbers of migratory birds during the monsoon and winter months. The wetland shelters endangered species such as the Dalmatian Pelican, Oriental Darter, Black-necked Stork, and Indian Skimmer. Thousands of flamingos, common cranes, painted storks, raptors, and spoonbills are also commonly seen here. Beyond birds, the area supports wildlife like chinkara, wolves, caracal, desert cats, and desert foxes.
