Kutch Maldharis detained in Maharashtra with 32 Camels

Bhuj: Maldharis from Kutch, who migrate across states such as Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with their livestock for livelihood, often depend on Kutchi and Kharai camels to carry household goods and young animals during migration. However, due to a lack of legal awareness and misunderstandings among animal welfare groups, two Maldharis from Kutch have once again been caught in a legal dispute in Maharashtra.

Rabari herder Bharabhai Mangubhai from Jadva village in Lakhpat taluka and his son, Mangalbhai, were detained along with 32 camels after a case was registered at Shahada police station in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district on December 26. A police team later visited Kutch to record statements from camel herders and representatives of the community organisation. The investigation team submitted a report on January 12, 2026, stating that the camels were not being taken for slaughter but were meant for use during Maldhari migration. The court subsequently ordered the camels’ release, but the matter remains pending as the complainant filed an appeal. Adding to the complications, Rajasthan’s Mahavir Camel Sanctuary in Sirohi district has sought custody of the animals, further increasing difficulties for the Maldharis.

Efforts are underway to secure the release of both the herders and the camels, with Kutch MP Vinod Chavda actively pursuing the issue. Representatives, including former Maldhari organisation president Bhikhabhai Rabari and Sahjeevan NGO members, were present during hearings in Nandurbar court. The next hearing is scheduled for February 4, 2026, Sahjeevan program director Ramesh Bhatti said. DeshGujarat
