Over 2,900 stray dogs sterilised in four months in Surat

Surat: As complaints of dog attacks continue to rise, the municipality has stepped up efforts to ensure public safety by accelerating the vaccination and sterilisation of stray dogs. According to municipal records, 2,976 dogs have been vaccinated and sterilised over the past four months. Despite these measures, the problem remains widespread, with residents continuing to report dog-bite incidents on a daily basis.

Sources in the municipality said the Market Department is working continuously to catch stray animals and dogs. After being captured, the dogs are vaccinated and sterilised before being released back into the same areas from where they were picked up.

Over the last four months, a total of 3,704 dogs were caught from various parts of the city, of which 2,976 underwent vaccination and sterilisation. Month-wise figures show that 609 dogs were sterilised in October, 904 in November, 1,020 in December, and 443 in January.

While the municipality claims it is making sustained efforts, incidents of dog attacks continue to increase across the city. To address food scarcity among stray dogs, designated feeding spots have recently been set up in each ward to ensure dogs receive food in all zones. Residents who feed animals have been urged to use these designated points instead of throwing food randomly, so that dogs can access food more easily and disturbances in public areas can be reduced.
