BJP, Congress field candidates for Gujarat Assembly Deputy Speaker election
February 13, 2026
Gandhinagar: Ahead of the upcoming election for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have fielded their candidates. From the BJP, Surat West MLA Purnesh Modi filed his nomination for the post in the presence of Cabinet Minister Jitu Vaghani and other senior party leaders.
Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded Danilimda MLA Shailesh Parmar for the post, ruling out the possibility of an unopposed election and making voting in the House inevitable.
With the opposition fielding a candidate, a political contest in the Assembly is now certain. Although the ruling party enjoys a clear numerical majority, the Congress’s decision to enter the fray is being viewed as a symbolic political challenge.
The final list of valid candidates will be announced after completion of the nomination process, while the election will be held on Monday, February 16. DeshGujarat
