Rajkot RTO gets AI-based driving test track equipped with 17 smart cameras, RFID sensors

Rajkot: A modern AI-enabled driving test track has been set up at the Rajkot RTO office at a cost of ₹80 lakh, aimed at making licence tests faster, more accurate, and free from human intervention. The facility is equipped with 17 movable, 360-degree AI cameras and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) sensors to automatically assess two-wheeler and four-wheeler driving tests.

Underground sensors and a dedicated power backup system will allow the track to function smoothly during storms, rains, or power outages, ensuring uninterrupted testing for nearly 500 applicants who appear daily for driving tests in Rajkot.

Rajkot RTO officer Indrajit Tak said candidates will be required to watch an instructional video before attempting the test so they clearly understand the process and time limits. The AI-based system will automatically record results, including reasons for failure, enabling applicants to improve in future attempts.

The new track marks a major upgrade from the existing facility, which currently relies on only four ageing CCTV cameras, around 13 years old, with poor visibility and frequent technical glitches. Maintenance challenges have persisted since the track’s upkeep contract was not renewed after December 31, 2017, often leading to shutdowns due to faults and a lack of technical staff.

Under the upgraded system, advanced AI cameras capable of full 360-degree rotation will monitor test parameters such as slope driving, parking, reverse movement, and track navigation. RFID sensors will track vehicle movement across both two-wheeler and four-wheeler test lanes, while underground wiring will minimise monsoon-related damage.

Officials expect the AI-driven track to significantly reduce technical disruptions, streamline testing, and enhance transparency in the driving licence evaluation process once it becomes fully operational in the coming weeks. DeshGujarat
