₹1,278 crore push to make Ahmedabad ‘Olympic-ready’ ahead of Commonwealth Games 2030

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has announced a major infrastructure push centered on sports and urban transport as part of preparations for hosting the Commonwealth Games 2030, with Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai proposing a ₹1,278 crore provision to transform Ahmedabad into an “Olympic Ready City”.

Presenting the Budget 2026-27, the minister said hosting the Games has elevated Gujarat’s global profile and is expected to attract investment across sports, tourism, hospitality, transport and services while generating large-scale employment.

International-class sports infrastructure

Under the plan, an international-standard sports complex and stadium will be established in Ahmedabad along with supporting urban facilities. The infrastructure is intended not only for the Games but also as a long-term asset for training, competitions and sports promotion in the state.

Officials said the project will include modern stadium amenities, athlete facilities and spectator infrastructure meeting global event standards.

Transport and city upgrades

The “Olympic Ready City” initiative will also integrate public transport improvements so that venues remain well connected and accessible. The government indicated that upgraded roads, metro connectivity and urban facilities will be developed around sports zones to handle large visitor volumes during the Games and serve residents afterwards.

Long-term economic impact

The state expects the preparations to stimulate investment in hotels, tourism and service sectors, creating employment opportunities both during construction and after completion. The infrastructure is planned as a permanent urban legacy, positioning Ahmedabad as an international sports destination beyond 2030.
