AIMIM Workers Detained Over Protest Against Gujarat UCC in Ahmedabad
March 21, 2026
Ahmedabad: Days before the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026 is set to be tabled in the State Assembly, workers of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) staged a protest against the proposed law outside the Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
The demonstration took place on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and was held without prior permission from the police, officials said.
Protesters gathered near the mosque carrying banners with slogans such as “Remove UCC, Save the Nation” and “Repeal UCC”, while raising slogans opposing the proposed legislation.
One of the protesters claimed that the proposed UCC is against their religious beliefs and cultural traditions. A woman protester said they had gathered to oppose the bill as their Sharia does not permit such provisions. She demanded that the government withdraw the proposed law.
The protesters said that although a similar law has been implemented in Uttarakhand, they would oppose it in Gujarat as well and urged the government to repeal the proposed legislation.
Police personnel reached the spot soon after the protest began and detained around 12–13 persons to maintain law and order. All those detained were later removed from the area. Police said the situation remained under control and no untoward incident was reported.
The proposed legislation, titled Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, is scheduled to be tabled in the Assembly next week on March 24, after a high-level committee submitted its draft report to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel earlier this week. DeshGujarat
