Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Forest Department has issued a public advisory against feeding wild animals, stressing that such actions are not just irresponsible but also a punishable offence under the law.

Officials warned that even small human interventions, such as feeding wildlife, can disrupt their natural behaviour and ecological balance. Highlighting the case of the Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus), authorities urged citizens to be aware of the legal and environmental consequences.

Under the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, the Hanuman langur is listed under Schedule II, granting it legal protection.

Providing any kind of food to the animal is considered an offence and can attract strict penalties, including imprisonment of up to three years and a minimum fine of ₹25,000.

The department has appealed to the public to refrain from feeding wild animals and to report any such activities.
