Water from Tapi-Karjan Link Lift Irrigation Scheme reaches Karjan River

Bharuch: In a major development for the region’s agricultural landscape, water from the ₹927-crore Tapi–Karjan Link Lift Irrigation Scheme has reached the Karjan River, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and wildlife alike.
The project is proving to be a vital lifeline for farmers in Umarpada of Surat, Chikda and Dediapada of Narmada, and Netrang of Bharuch. The availability of water during the peak summer season has come as a blessing, particularly for the survival of summer crops.
Water is currently flowing through Chikda (Relwa Bharada) and villages in Dediapada taluka, including Navagam and Solia-Koliwada. This influx has caused local check dams to fill up and overflow even at the height of summer.
Key highlights of the infrastructure’s impact include:
Village Connectivity: Through a pipeline system under the Umarpada Taluka Water Supply Scheme, approximately 24 villages, including Chavda, are now receiving fresh and clean water.
Crop Diversification: Farmers are utilising diesel engines and pipelines to draw water for a variety of summer crops such as maize, green moong, and vegetables.
Livestock Support: The scheme is also providing water for green fodder, essential for maintaining livestock health.
Historically, the Karjan River would dry up during the summer months before the implementation of the Tapi–Karjan Link project. However, the project, which was inaugurated just last month by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has effectively revived the river. DeshGujarat
