Traffic Signals in Surat to Remain Shut During Afternoon Hours Amid Scorching Heat
April 15, 2026
Surat: In view of rising summer temperatures and intense heat in the city, the Surat City Traffic Police has taken a significant decision to provide relief to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders. Starting today, traffic signals on major roads will remain non-operational during afternoon hours to reduce commuters’ exposure to the scorching sun.
As per the decision, signals will be kept in blinking mode or switched off between 1 pm and 4 pm at locations with relatively lower traffic. This move aims to ensure that motorists are not forced to wait at signals under extreme heat conditions.
Surat has been experiencing severe heat over the past few days, with temperatures soaring close to 40°C, making commuting particularly difficult for two-wheeler riders, who are more vulnerable to heatstroke. Taking note of the situation, the Police Commissioner approved the temporary measure in the interest of public safety and convenience.
To maintain traffic discipline and prevent accidents during this period, traffic police personnel and members of the traffic brigade will be deployed at key junctions to regulate vehicular movement.
In addition, artificial shade structures have been installed at several major intersections, wherever feasible, to protect commuters from direct sunlight. Authorities have also appealed to four-wheeler drivers to allow two-wheeler riders to take shelter under these shades.
Police officials stated that the decision prioritises the health and safety of citizens amid the ongoing heatwave conditions. DeshGujarat
