Mahisagar: Four policemen were allegedly attacked by a mob in Batakwada village of Mahisagar district in the early hours of Friday while they were pursuing two suspicious persons.
The incident occurred when the policemen, deployed on night patrol in a private vehicle due to ongoing local body elections, spotted two men on a motorcycle near a junction on the Batakwada–Fatepura road. The duo, carrying a fertiliser bag, allegedly ignored police signals to stop, prompting the team to chase them.
The suspects abandoned their motorcycle near a river on the outskirts of Batakwada and fled into the village. The policemen including head constables Jitendra Motibhai and Mahendrasinh Jaysinh, along with constables Dinesh Dhanabhai and Chirag Balwantsinh entered the village in search of the duo.
During the search, they were confronted by a group of around 15 to 20 villagers, who accused the policemen of harassing local youths. The situation escalated, and the mob allegedly assaulted the officers.
One of the policemen managed to alert the Santrampur police station, following which additional personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured officers.
Santrampur police have registered a case against 20 persons, including Dilip Mansingh Rajat, Alpesh Mansingh Rajat and Lalsingh Hakra Rajat, under Sections 109(1), 121(1), 189(2), 190, 191(2), 191(3), 352 and 351(3) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act.
