AI-Generated Fake Train Tickets Racket Busted; Multiple Arrests in Ahmedabad and Jodhpur
April 22, 2026
Ahmedabad: A high-tech fraud involving the use of artificial intelligence to generate fake railway tickets and sell them to unsuspecting passengers has come to light, raising serious concerns for railway authorities.
The scam surfaced on March 21 when Train No. 22968 Prayagraj–Ahmedabad Express reached Ahmedabad. During routine ticket checking, officials were shocked to find that 15 passengers were travelling on forged tickets. A similar case has also been reported from Jodhpur railway station, where fake tickets were issued to passengers travelling on trains including Asarwa–Udaipur, Jaipur–Agra, Agra Fort–Jodhpur, and Varanasi City–Jodhpur Express.
Authorities have initiated legal action, arresting 15 passengers in the Ahmedabad case and two in the Jodhpur case for possessing fake tickets.
Modus Operandi: AI-Driven Ticket Manipulation
Investigations revealed a sophisticated fraud mechanism powered by AI tools:
Base Ticket Purchase: Fraudsters first bought a genuine low-cost digital ticket for any route.
Data Alteration: Using advanced tools, they modified key details such as travel date, route, and passenger information.
Reuse of Genuine Identifiers: The original UTS number was retained to make the ticket appear authentic during verification.
AI Image Processing: Editing tools replicated original fonts, colors, and layout with high precision.
Pixel-Level Formatting: AI ensured the ticket’s visual quality matched genuine tickets.
Mass Cloning: Multiple fake copies were generated using the same original ticket number.
On-Screen Display: Fake tickets were shown on mobile screens to mislead ticket examiners.
Serious Financial and Legal Impact
Officials say such AI-enabled fraud is causing significant revenue losses to the railways. More worryingly, innocent passengers—often from economically weaker or less aware backgrounds—are being duped into buying these tickets. Despite acting in good faith, they face penalties, legal action, and even possible imprisonment when caught with forged tickets.
Advisory for Passengers
To avoid falling victim to such scams:
Purchase tickets only from authorised railway booking counters or the official IRCTC Rail Connect app and website.
Do not trust tickets received as edited PDFs or screenshots from unknown sources.
Immediately report suspicious ticket sales or agents to the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Railway authorities have urged passengers to remain vigilant as cyber-enabled fraud in ticketing systems becomes increasingly sophisticated.
