April 30, 2026
Vadodara: Resident doctors at Sayaji (SSG) Hospital have gone on an strike following an alleged assault by a patient’s family, disrupting routine medical services. Emergency and OPD services, however, remain operational for now.
The incident occurred on April 29, when the family of an elderly woman who died on April 27 arrived to collect her body from the morgue. Alleging negligence after finding the body in a decomposed state, a group of around 30 people reportedly turned violent and attacked hospital staff.
Resident doctors claimed that a female doctor was dragged and assaulted, while another doctor was manhandled during the scuffle. Police later intervened and brought the situation under control.
The striking doctors have demanded enhanced security measures before resuming duties, including permanent security deployment, increased CCTV surveillance, improved lighting in vulnerable areas, and stricter enforcement of laws protecting medical professionals.
Vadodara District Collector, Joint Police Commissioner, and SSG Superintendent Dr. Ranjan Iyer have held multiple rounds of talks with the doctors and urged them to call off the strike in the interest of patients. DeshGujarat
