Gandhinagar Rolls Out Gujarat’s First AI-Based Smart Traffic Signal System
May 02, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has introduced an AI-based smart traffic signal system at Panchmeshwar Circle and Happiness Circle on PDPU Road, marking the first such deployment in Gujarat.
The newly installed system features illuminated LED cantilever signal poles that remain clearly visible even at night and during adverse weather conditions. The move is aimed at reducing signal violations and enhancing overall road safety.
The upgraded junction has been equipped with advanced technology, including AI-enabled detection cameras that dynamically adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic density. This adaptive mechanism is expected to ease congestion and reduce unnecessary waiting time for commuters.
Additionally, the AI system monitors vehicular movement and pedestrian activity across 24 distinct zones, offering more accurate and faster traffic management compared to conventional systems.
Civic authorities said the data generated through smart analysis will support future traffic planning and infrastructure development. Encouraged by the results, the corporation plans to roll out similar intelligent traffic systems at other busy junctions across the city in a phased manner, aiming to make urban traffic management more efficient and commuter-friendly.
