Gujarat Emerges as India’s Largest Renewable Energy Producer

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has emerged as the leading state in India in terms of installed renewable energy capacity, surpassing Rajasthan by a narrow margin, according to figures released by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

As of March 31, 2026, Gujarat, with a total installed renewable energy capacity of 47,178MW, climbed to the top position nationally, overtaking Rajasthan, which recorded 47,020MW. The state, which ranked second in 2024-25, added nearly 13,785MW of renewable energy capacity over the past year to secure the lead.

Solar and wind energy continue to dominate Gujarat’s renewable energy portfolio. As per MNRE data, the state’s installed capacity includes 29,303MW of solar power, 15,642MW of wind power, 1,990MW of large hydro projects, 113MW of small hydro, and 130MW from bio-power sources.

Although Gujarat now leads in overall renewable energy capacity, Rajasthan continues to top the country in solar power generation alone, with 41,012MW of installed solar capacity.

Gujarat has also maintained its dominance in rooftop solar installations. Under rooftop solar initiatives, including the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the state has achieved a rooftop solar capacity of 6,881MW, the highest in the country. DeshGujarat
