May 14, 2026
Surat:The ₹12,020 crore Surat Metro Rail Project being implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has achieved a major milestone, with over 75% of the total work now completed.
In a significant development, trial operations have now commenced on Corridor-2 (East-West Corridor). Structural work on a 6.5 km stretch, including seven stations, has been completed in Corridor-2. As part of the trial phase, metro trains will undergo approximately 500 hours of testing to evaluate performance, safety, and system reliability.
Trial runs are already underway on a key stretch of Corridor-1 (North-South Corridor). The trials on this corridor, covering 8.5 km between Dream City and Althan Tenement with seven stations, began on March 29, 2026. Currently, multiple testing and verification processes are being carried out jointly by GMRC and the General Engineering Consultant (GEC).
Following these trials, further inspections will be conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and other regulatory authorities. The final safety certification will be granted by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) before commercial operations begin.
The 40.35 km-long metro network, spread across two corridors, will feature 38 stations and two depots — Dream City Depot and Bhesan Depot.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to completing the project on time, with continuous monitoring and support from top leadership to ensure rapid progress.
These details were shared by GMRC. DeshGujarat
