Reduced size of Edible Oil dabba, Prices Up; Congress leader writes letter to CM
May 16, 2026
Surat: Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) General Secretary Darshan A. Nayak has raised concerns over alleged “shrinkflation” in edible oil packaging, accusing reduced pack(dabba) sizes of edible oil without passing on any price benefit to consumers. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, he alleged possible collusion between the government and oil industry players.
Nayak questioned the reduction of traditional 15 kg/15-litre edible oil packs to 12.5–13 kg/litre variants and whether any official notification was issued by the Legal Metrology Department. He also asked why prices have not fallen despite reduced quantities and sought details of action against hoarding, artificial shortages, and alleged cartelization.
The complaint claims that while pack sizes have reduced across several brands, prices have continued to rise, calling the practice an “economic robbery” against consumers. Nayak has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and strict action against alleged shrinkflation practices. DeshGujarat
