Gandhinagar: Ahmedabad is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 ahead of India’s proposed bid for the 2036 Olympics, prompting the Gujarat government to accelerate plans for large-scale sports infrastructure development around the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.
As part of the preparations, the state government has granted in-principle approval for the allocation of ₹500 crore to initiate work, including land acquisition, for the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave. The ambitious project, estimated to cost ₹5,050 crore, will be developed across 236 acres in Ahmedabad.
The Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department has approved the initial funding to begin the project, which aims to create a world-class multi-sports hub around the Narendra Modi Stadium, with a seating capacity of 1.30 lakh spectators. The proposed enclave will include infrastructure for more than 50 Olympic sports disciplines in addition to cricket.
The Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) has received administrative approval to undertake land acquisition and related processes, with the government targeting completion of the project within four to five years. Official resolutions regarding the project were issued recently.
Separately, the government has also approved ₹100 crore in the current financial year as part of a larger ₹2,900 crore plan to develop world-class infrastructure at the Karai Police Academy near Motera, keeping in mind the requirements of future global sporting events.
While India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics is still under consideration, the Commonwealth Games Committee has reportedly accepted Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 edition. The government has also approved a token provision of ₹1 crore in the first year under the planning process for the event. DeshGujarat
