Gujarat Allows Farmers to Buy Up to 200 Litres of Petrol, Diesel in Barrels for Agricultural Needs

Ahmedabad: Amid reports of long queues for petrol and diesel in several districts of Gujarat over the past week, the state government has announced relaxations for farmers and key service sectors to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply and prevent disruption to essential activities.

Under the revised arrangements, farmers will now be allowed to purchase petrol and diesel in open containers or barrels up to a maximum limit of 200 litres to ensure agricultural activities are not affected. Telecom companies will also be permitted to procure fuel in larger quantities to meet operational requirements. Additionally, fuel allocation for infrastructure projects and industrial units in each district will be based on their average fuel consumption over the previous six months.

However, for ordinary motorists, the existing system of dispensing fuel only into vehicle tanks will continue.

The administration has urged citizens not to panic over rumours of fuel shortages circulating on social media and other platforms, stressing that there is no cause for concern.

Panic Buying Triggering Temporary Fuel Shortages: Oil Companies

Oil marketing companies said panic buying driven by misinformation is contributing to temporary supply disruptions. According to officials, public sector oil marketing companies have recorded a surge of more than 80% in fuel sales.

They said rumours of fuel shortages on social media have prompted many consumers to unnecessarily refill vehicle tanks or stockpile fuel. As a result, fuel stocks delivered to petrol pumps are often exhausted immediately upon arrival, leading to temporary delays before fresh supplies can be transported from main terminals.

Officials reiterated that fuel supplies remain adequate and appealed to the public to avoid panic-driven purchases. DeshGujarat
