Ahmedabad: The restoration and conservation of the historic Matar Bhavani Vav in Asarwa have commenced, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) sanctioning ₹50 lakh for the project aimed at preserving the nationally protected monument.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the conservation work was held today in the presence of Minister of State Darshanaben Vaghela, who had earlier taken up the issue with the ASI after reports emerged about cracks developing in the centuries-old stepwell.
According to officials, the ₹50 lakh project will focus on structural conservation, repairs and preservation of the monument’s historical and architectural features. The initiative is expected to address safety concerns and ensure the long-term protection of the heritage structure.
Speaking on the occasion, officials said the restoration work was undertaken following concerns over the condition of the stepwell. The ASI subsequently approved the conservation project to safeguard the monument and preserve it for future generations.
Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, Ahmedabad MP Dinesh Makwana, Deputy Mayor Anju Shah, Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel, party leader Jashu Thakor, along with corporators and local leaders from the Asarwa and Shahibaug wards, were present at the ceremony.
Matar Bhavani Vav is one of Ahmedabad’s important historical and cultural landmarks. Heritage enthusiasts and local residents have welcomed the restoration initiative, saying the conservation of monuments such as Matar Bhavani Vav is essential for preserving the city’s cultural identity and architectural legacy.
The renovation project will help maintain the original character and historical significance of the stepwell while strengthening its structure against further deterioration. The work is expected to play a key role in preserving one of Ahmedabad’s valuable heritage assets. DeshGujarat
