145-Year-Old Pratapnagar Rly Station Gets ₹71.58-Crore Makeover, Set to Decongest Vadodara Junction

Vadodara: The historic 145-year-old Pratapnagar Railway Station has been redeveloped at a cost of ₹71.58 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, transforming it into a modern, passenger-friendly transit hub while preserving its railway heritage. The upgraded station is expected to ease congestion at Vadodara Junction and strengthen rail connectivity in the region.

Established in 1880 as a key centre of the narrow-gauge railway network and home to a railway workshop since 1922, Pratapnagar is being developed as a strategic satellite station. Railway officials said it will help handle long-distance train operations and serve passengers travelling to the Statue of Unity.

Vadodara Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Raju Bhadke said the redevelopment has modernised passenger infrastructure while preserving the station’s historical significance.

The project includes upgraded passenger amenities on Platforms 1, 2 and 3, along with the construction of a new Platform 4. High-level platforms have been extended and resurfaced, while modern shelters, improved seating, additional toilets, upgraded signage, accessible booking counters and two lifts have been added.

A new station building has been constructed at the second entrance, along with a commercial area and supporting infrastructure. The revamped entry zone now features organised traffic circulation, dedicated parking facilities and clearly marked entry and exit routes.

The concourse has also been upgraded with new flooring, wall cladding, enhanced lighting and heritage-themed murals reflecting the station’s railway legacy. Officials said the improvements are aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and giving the station a refreshed identity.

Accessibility has been a key focus of the redevelopment. Disability-friendly booking counters, lifts connected to the foot overbridge (FOB) and other barrier-free facilities have been incorporated throughout the station.

Vadodara Division Public Relations Officer Anubhav Saxena said a major highlight of the project is a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge connecting all platforms and both sides of the city. Ramps and lift connectivity have also been provided to ensure seamless passenger movement.

Saxena said the redevelopment was designed to transform Pratapnagar into a modern, passenger-centric railway station while strengthening its role in the regional transport network. As a satellite station to Vadodara Junction, it is expected to play a key role in reducing congestion and improving travel facilities, particularly for visitors to the Statue of Unity. DeshGujarat
