Gujarat Energy Mulls Port-Based Propane Import Hub Near Morbi
June 08, 2026
Ahmedabad: Gujarat Energy Ltd (GEL), India’s largest city gas distribution company and one of the country’s biggest importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is exploring the development of dedicated port-based infrastructure for propane imports and storage as it seeks to expand its fuel offerings to industrial customers.
According to reports, GEL is in discussions with several ports in Gujarat regarding the proposed infrastructure. The company has also initiated talks with major global energy suppliers, including QatarEnergy and Saudi Aramco, for sourcing propane.
As part of the plan, GEL is evaluating the construction of an import jetty and storage facilities near Morbi, India’s largest ceramic manufacturing hub. The region has emerged as a key battleground in the competition between natural gas and propane as industrial fuels.
During an earnings call with investors earlier this week, company officials said discussions on draft supply contracts have already been held with multiple firms. However, GEL is keen to develop its own infrastructure to ensure seamless propane imports and storage. The company is therefore exploring port facilities near Morbi and remains in talks with port authorities in Gujarat. DeshGujarat
