Ahmedabad Metro Sees 1.75 Lakh Commuters as Heavy Rains Snarl Road Traffic

Ahmedabad: Heavy rains lashed the city on Thursday, and waterlogging in several areas severely disrupted road traffic. Amid traffic jams and slow-moving vehicles, a large number of commuters opted for the Ahmedabad Metro Rail service. Passenger footfall witnessed a significant increase compared to a normal day.

Ahmedabad Metro Rail operates 397 up and down trips daily. Around 1.75 lakh passengers are learnt to have availed of the Metro Rail service on Thursday as heavy rains affected road transport across the city. The Metro emerged as a fast and reliable mode of transport for thousands of commuters amid the traffic disruptions.

According to data released by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the city received an average rainfall of 8 inches today between 6 am and 8 pm. Several parts of the city witnessed extremely heavy rainfall, with the South West Zone, comprising Bopal, Bakrol, Sarkhej, Jodhpur, and other areas, recording the highest average rainfall of 320.29 mm (12.6 inches).
