Vadnagar Auto-Rickshaws Get Heritage Makeover Under GSFC Initiative

Gandhinagar: The state government is implementing various welfare and development schemes to transform the historic and culturally rich city of Vadnagar into a world-class tourist destination. State public sector undertakings are also joining these efforts, giving further impetus to tourism development.

As part of this initiative, Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GSFC), through its CSR fund, has undertaken a special project to give old auto-rickshaws in Vadnagar a new look that reflects the city’s rich history and heritage. The Vadnagar Heritage Auto Project is receiving logistical support from the State Tourism Department and Transport Department.

A large number of tourists from across India and abroad visit Vadnagar every year. The initiative aims to give the city a distinct identity and make it easier for tourists to explore its historical sites. More than 300 auto-rickshaws are currently registered in Vadnagar. To attract tourists and support local rickshaw drivers, more than ₹50,000 is being spent on retrofitting each rickshaw. In the first phase, 21 rickshaws were selected and their renovation has been completed.

The registration process is still ongoing to ensure that more rickshaw drivers can benefit from the joint initiative of the government and the state PSU. Rickshaw drivers who wish to give their vehicles a heritage-themed makeover reflecting Vadnagar’s history can contact the GSFC representative at Vadnagar S.T. Depot to avail themselves of the scheme.

The partnership between the state PSU and the government’s tourism promotion efforts is expected to offer visitors a unique experience of Vadnagar’s culture and heritage while also providing a boost to local employment. DeshGujarat
