PM Modi likely to visit Gujarat for Modhera Sun Temple 1,000th anniversary

Modhera: The world-famous Sun Temple at Modhera in Mehsana district is set to mark 1,000 years since its construction, with a grand celebration being planned to commemorate the historic monument. The temple was built in 1026–27 AD during the reign of King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty. It is learnt that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Modhera on September 22 as part of the commemorative events. However, the local administration has not yet issued any official confirmation regarding the visit.

Where did the idol of Suryadev go?

One of the enduring mysteries surrounding the 1,000-year-old temple is the absence of the main idol of Suryadev from the sanctum sanctorum. The sanctum has a Bhadrapithika, or pedestal, believed to have been used for the main idol, while the temple features intricate carvings of Surya’s seven horses.

According to popular belief, the main idol of Suryadev was moved elsewhere during the medieval period to protect it from invading forces.

The temple walls also feature 12 representations of Suryadev. Four of these sculptures depict the deity wearing boots and riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, reflecting the distinctive artistic style of the temple’s architecture.

The Modhera Sun Temple, now a protected monument, remains one of Gujarat’s most prominent examples of Solanki-era architecture and attracts visitors from across India and abroad.
