Surat Metro likely to begin operations on Dream City – Althan stretch by November end

Surat: The wait for Surat residents to travel by metro is likely to end soon, with preparations for starting services on the 8.5-km stretch between Dream City and Althan Tenement Station, a key section of Corridor-1 (North-South Corridor), reaching the final stage.

A trial run is already underway on this route, during which various metro systems are being tested. Following the trial, work is being carried out on a war footing to complete the remaining technical and administrative formalities at the earliest.

If the ongoing processes are completed as planned, metro services between Dream City and Althan are likely to begin around Diwali or by the end of November.

The ₹12,020-crore Surat Metro Rail Project is being implemented by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) to provide a modern and faster public transport system to the city. Most of the work required to start metro operations between Dream City and Althan under Corridor-1 has been completed.

During the current trial run, various technical systems, including tracks, power supply and signalling systems, are being tested to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the metro.

Underground tunnel work progresses

Work on other parts of Corridor-1 is also progressing. Construction of the underground metro tunnel between Chowk Bazaar and the station area is currently underway.

Once the tunnel work is completed, Surat residents will also be able to experience metro travel through the underground section of the city. DeshGujarat
