Gujarat likely to receive below-normal rainfall in September: IMD

Gandhinagar: Gujarat is likely to receive below-normal rainfall in September, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rain at isolated places across the state in the coming days. Strong winds of up to 25 knots are also likely along parts of the Gujarat coast.

According to the IMD’s September outlook, rainfall over the country as a whole is most likely to remain below normal, at less than 91% of the long-period average (LPA). Gujarat is also expected to receive below-normal rainfall during the month, while both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal.

IMD data for the monsoon season up to August 31 puts Gujarat’s rainfall deficit at around 13%. The rainfall pattern, however, remains uneven across the state. While several districts in Saurashtra and Kutch have recorded significant rainfall shortfalls, a number of districts in South Gujarat have received excess rainfall.

Over the next few days, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places across Gujarat, including Saurashtra and Kutch. Ahmedabad is expected to experience generally cloudy conditions, with the possibility of light rain.

The IMD has also warned of strong winds along the coast due to a steep pressure gradient. Along the North Gujarat coast, winds are expected to blow at 15–20 knots and may reach up to 25 knots. Along the South Gujarat coast, southwesterly to westerly winds of 15–25 knots are likely over the next 12 hours.

Several weather systems are currently influencing conditions across the country. A low-pressure area is active over Gangetic West Bengal, North Odisha, Jharkhand and the northwest Bay of Bengal, while the monsoon trough extends across parts of north India. A trough extending from South Gujarat towards Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh also continues to influence weather conditions, with southwesterly winds becoming established over Gujarat.
